Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson Only Recorded One Song Together — “Lay Me Down”
Despite a friendship that spanned decades, Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson only ever joined voices on a single recording. That lone collaboration was the hauntingly beautiful 2016 duet, Lay Me Down.
The song carries a quiet, spiritual weight, with lyrics that reflect peace, acceptance, and the promise of rest beyond this life — themes that feel even more powerful in hindsight.
Loretta Lynn passed away on October 4, 2022, at the age of 90. Shortly after her passing, Willie honored his longtime friend with a simple but heartfelt tribute.
“Loretta was a good friend and incredibly talented,” he said. “She was a wonderful writer, singer, and human being. I’ll miss her very much.”
A New Generation Honors a Timeless Song
Loretta’s family held a public memorial service celebrating her life on October 30, 2022, at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Fans around the world were able to watch the service live on CMT.
One of the most unforgettable moments came when Willie’s son, Lukas Nelson, and Loretta’s granddaughter, Emmy Russell, took the stage together to perform “Lay Me Down.”

Their performance was deeply moving — the kind that gives you chills almost immediately. CMT later described the moment as “emotional,” and that barely scratches the surface. Tears were almost unavoidable.
The tribute resonated far beyond that night. Lukas and Emmy’s performance went on to earn a nomination for CMT Performance of the Year at the 2023 CMT Music Awards.
While walking the red carpet, Emmy reflected on the most meaningful advice her grandmother ever gave her.
“The biggest lesson she taught me was to love God,” Emmy shared. “She lived her faith. It was always about listening to Him and following His voice.”
Their rendition of “Lay Me Down” felt like a bridge between generations — honoring Loretta’s legacy while carrying it forward with grace. It’s safe to say both Loretta and Willie would’ve been proud.
Since then, Emmy Russell has continued carving her own musical path. She later appeared on American Idol Season 22, finishing in the Top 5 and proving that while she carries a legendary last name, she’s telling her own story — in her own voice.
Some songs only get recorded once for a reason. “Lay Me Down” was one of them.
